Tropic of Capricorn

Tropic of Capricorn

Just over 23 degrees south of the Equator lies the Southern most border of the tropics, the Tropic of Capricorn. It crosses some of the most remote and unexplored regions of the world. Following its path through Africa, Australia and South America, Simon Reeve unearths human stories of history, culture and politics to both fascinate and enthral.

An African success story, Botswana is wealthier than almost any other country in the region, and perhaps the least corrupt state on the continent. Simon crosses the Kalahari desert to visit the last remaining bushmen and visits the world’s largest diamond mine at Jwaneng, which has made the country into one of the world’s fastest growing economies.

In Namibia, Simon finds fantastic wildlife as well as increasing numbers of tourists visiting the country in search of extreme adventures.

The exotic charms of Madagascar hide an impending environmental catastrophe, while the white farmers of South Africa are launching their own response to the Zimbabwe refugee crisis. Across the globe to Australia, Simon investigates the government crackdown on Aboriginal communities.

And in South America, he travels from Chile to Brazil, crosses the Andes to brave the bandit infested tri-border region in Paraguay.

It’s a journey through countries, cultures and continents that offers a fascinating insight into the way life is lived along the Tropic of Capricorn.
