By spending a summer on location in the Med, in the company of popular and engaging geologist Dr Iain Stewart, this series rediscovers the links between our lives today and the geology of the past. Each episode is a journey through a variety of popular Mediterranean holiday destinations.
But the landmarks are just the beginning as we then take Iain’s alternative tour of familiar sites and reveal the surprising geology behind them. The pyramids in Egypt, thermal springs in Turkey, the restaurants of Italy, all look very different when seen through Iain’s eyes. He knows that locked up in the rocks is a complete history of us – from hunter gatherer to beach bum.
By understanding the rocks and how they have shaped our lives he reveals – through a series of strange and surprising connections – the geological links between the past and the present. By going on holiday with Iain we are introduced to his particularly ‘rocky view’ of the world and discover that the things we enjoy now – from Italian food to impressionist art – began their story in the rocks beneath our feet.
